A quiet shift beneath the surface, a hairline fracture, a miniscule spark - all is enough to trigger an avalanche, release a flood, or a fire revolution. Beneath the surface, PaperCase have been whittling away, slowly crafting and characterising a sound that they call theirs. They’ve hardly come up for air to be noticed, just occasionally surfacing to breathe in the atmosphere of the local and international music scene, and dive back into the depths of their song writing, and practice sessions.
A long wait it has been, since in 2007 the members of PaperCase have been together for almost six years, playing every Sunday at their home church in Johannesburg, and a few gigs here and there. But one feels that a long developed relationship has soaked into their music; it has a sensitivity and depth that could only have been knit by a band playing together this long, but yet spiced with a freshness of a band that has been together for only a month. The result is a provoking intuitive weaving of tunes, melodies, instruments, notes and harmonies all packaged together in a pressure cooker of hard rock sound. “We’ve taken this long because we just needed to find the right vehicle, we’re getting there,” says Keith, the lead singer of the band, in reference to PaperCases’ continued honing of their own sound. “We’ve had great response to our latest stuff, and so, in December 2006 we went into the studio to record our debut four track EP. We felt it was time to introduce ourselves to the public”, he adds.
About the themes of their songs, the band is uncomplicated. “We are believers in Christ Jesus, and that’s what we sing about, He is our hope and truth”, says Keith. Indeed a depth of soul runs through their songs. From the warring anthem calls in ‘Frontline’ to heartfelt surrender in ‘Faded’ and reassurances of hope in their EP title track ‘Surfacing’. Their songs penetrate, and affect a positive, thumping heartfelt response.
This band has certainly been cocooning for a long while. But, as subterranean rumblings often omen of future volcanic explosions, perhaps PaperCases’ aptly titled debut EP ‘Surfacing’ will reverberate into the great musical phenomenon it deserves to be. – BPR
