“The Niwel Tsumbu duo unveil a cavernous stash of redemptive music, and promise much more to come."
Siobhan Long Irish Times March 2007
Niwel Tsumbu is a virtuoso guitar player from the Democratic Republic of The Congo, an exceptional musician who has quickly risen to become a recognisable face on the Irish music scene. On his duo project he teams up with Eamonn Cagney, a versatile and dynamic drummer, bringing powerful and "spinetingling percussion". Together they have what has been described as a "unique meeting of minds".
While there is a strong African, Jazz and World Music influence in the Niwel Tsumbu Duo, there is also a wild, open and undefineable essence in their music that is attracting a fanbase for them all over Ireland and abroad. They have performed in many key venues and arts centres such as Cork Opera House, the Everyman Palace Theatre, The Triskel Arts Centre, the Firkin Crane and De Barra's in Cork; The RDS, The Sugar Club and Crawdaddy in Dublin; and at prestigious festivals such as Cork Jazz festival, Bray Jazz festival, Bulmers World Music festival, The Electric Picnic and many more.
They have supported The Buena Vista Social Club, world-renowned bass player Richard Bona, Micheal O Suilleabhain, John Spillane, Steve Cooney and others. The Duo have been noted for their easy on-stage manner, combining enormous energy with good humour and Siobhan Long in her Irish Times review noted that Niwel “had us eating out of the palm of his hand”.
They have released their self-funded and promoted album on their own label, Offbeat, and it has received airplay on National and Intenational Radio and online.
They performed live on RTE2 televison's "The View" In October 2006 and were the featured Artists on RTE Lyric FM's "JK Ensemble" show in June 2007, recording a Live RTE studio session. They have had numerous RTE Radio appearances, including "The Eleventh Hour", "Spectrum", "Ronan Beo@3" (RnaG), and many local Irish stations.
Niwel Tsumbu Duo trades in good vibrations. With wayward incantations, spinetingling percussion and surgically precise guitar lines…immense confidence and panache … had us eating out of the palm of his hand. Irish Times, March 2007
The guitar playing is superb: Tsumbu is eclectic in his styles and the freedom and fluidity with which he blends styles, from the Soukous and Rhumba of the Congo to jazz and classical. Fly.co.uk
This duo play a beautiful mixture of Congolese jazz, classical and funk. Believe it or not this was produced in Cork. Mongrel.ie
Niwel’s sound reminds one of erstwhile Dublin duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela. Their jazz sandwich sound is in there and Rodrigo Y Gabriela must’ve known someone would come along with a better sandwich soon enough. Musician.ie
The Duo has completed material for a second album and is actively seeking representation for Concerts, Touring and Album promotion. |
